Campaign Series 54- Shiloh 1862- The Death of Innocence
By James Arnold & David G. Chandler
Published by Osprey Military

The first major battle in the Western Theatre of the American Civil War, Shiloh came as a horrifying shock to both public and army. For the first time they had an idea of the terrible price that would be paid for the preservation of the Union. On 6 April 1862 General Albert Sidney Johnston caught Grant by surprise and very nearly defeated him. Somehow the Federals hung on and the text day managed to drive back the hordes of grey-clad rebels. Shiloh would be the benchmark for the next three years of bloody war.
James Arnold has written 14 books on military history, and co-authored or contributed to numerous others. His previous work for Osprey includes Campaign 17 Chickamauga 1863 which was very well received. His most recent work is Grant Wins the War: Decision at Vicksburg. He and his wife live on a farm in the Valley of Virginia.
